St Mary's Church, Reculver Church

Surprises galore here for this 1870s church replaced a fifty year old building that had in turn been erected to replace the fantastic Saxon church on the cliffs now known as `Reculver Towers`. What appears to be a standard little church by Joseph Clarke is in fact a treasure house of remains of the old church. These start with the south doorway – flamboyant work of the thirteenth century. Inside, portions of the chancel arch are reused 13th century work. Set into the floor is a matrix of a brass to the priest and a high quality thirteenth century grave cover with delightful Lombardic lettering….now unfortunately hidden by a carpet. There is good 20c stained glass by Lawrence Lee and Wallace Wood. Open daily, this welcoming and charming church is the perfect foil to the ruins a mile away.
